Today I will show you how to add Extra Insurance to your shipments, using our platform, SMARTT Shipping.
After you have completed entering all of your shipment information and have gotten your carrier rates back, you can see here that an insured value is generated next to your carrier rates.
For this shipment, the insurance amount is automatically generated to 1000 dollars due to the Canadian industry standard for Cargo Liability, which is up to 2 dollars per pound.
This means that since the freight entered for this shipment weighs a total of 500 pounds, the maximum insurance coverage is only 1000 dollars.
But what happens if your freight is worth more than the standard liability?
Complete Shipping Solutions is proud to be partnered with an insurance company to provide you with the ability to insure your freight for its total invoice value.
If you would like to add extra insurance, you can simply click “Add Extra Insurance” below the Insured Value on the Carrier you would like to use.
A new window will open up allowing you to enter the invoice value of your goods.
For this example, we’ll use 5000 Canadian dollars.
Please note, that if the insured value that you are requesting is over 75,000 dollars, you will need to submit a special request.
For now, select the “Check Extra Insurance Cost” button and a breakdown of the freight and insurance charges will be provided.
As you can see, increasing your cargo insurance from 1000 dollars to 5000 dollars, is only 54 dollars and 66 cents bringing the total cost of your shipment to 123 dollars and 51 cents.
For extra protection of your goods and peace of mind, extra insurance is always a good consideration.
It is also important to note this reminder asking you to save and take photos of your shipment, showing its packaging, prior to shipping.
This is in case any claims arise and is a requirement for all additional insurance shipments.
If you do not have these photos at the time of submitting your claim, your claim may immediately be denied.
It is crucial to also review the Extra Insurance Terms & Conditions. Once you have read and understand these conditions, they can be accepted here by ticking off this box.
When you are ready, you can select “Accept Extra Insurance” and an adjusted carrier rate will appear next to where your original quote was.
You can also double-check that this quote has additional insurance added to it, by looking here at the adjusted Insured Value which is now at 5000 Canadian dollars.
Now you are ready to ship this freight and insure your goods for their total value.
